Presentation of the SDS

The Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka, SDS) was founded in 1989 as the Social-Democratic Union of Slovenia (Socialdemokratska zveza Slovenije), renamed into the Social-Democratic Party of Slovenia (Socialdemokratska stranka Slovenije) by the end of the same year, and adopted its present name in 2003. Originally a non-Marxist social-democratic party, it has evolved into a liberal conservative party, which is nowadays a member of the European People's Party and the International Democrat Union.

Flag of the SDS

The party's statutes do not specify the flag, but only the logotype, as follows:

Article 4.
Sign and Symbol of the SDS
The sign of the SDS is the SDS logotype. The letters of the SDS abbreviation are blue (HKS43), below them is a yellow (HKS3) line of the same length as the letters and of height two thirds that of the letters.
The symbols of the party, their form and use as well as the form and use of the official seal are set out in regulations adopted by the SDS Executive Committee.

The flag, which is clearly based on the logotype, is horizontally divided yellow-white-yellow with blue party name abbreviation SDS in centre of the white field. The party has also used this flag before the name change in 2003, although the colour shades and the typeface seem to have varied somewhat. The flag must have been adopted at the 5th Congress of the party in 1999, because the party name abbreviation was changed then, without renaming of the party, from SDSS to SDS, which was used at the 6th Congress in and afterwards, but a similar flag must have been used before, because the earlier abbreviation was inscribed, in the same typeface as used nowadays, as the decoration for the 4th Congress in 1995.

Out of many photos showing the party flag which may be found on the Web, the one which gives the best look at it might be the one from the party Women Committee website, and the one from Kamnik section website shows a good comparison of the flag colours' shades with those of the flags of Slovenia and European Union. The same is true for the one from the website of the Slovenian Democratic Youth (Slovenska demokratska mladina), the youth wing of the party.
